A trip to the Isle

Happy Spring to you!

April is upon us and the sun is ever glowing overhead . . .

I  am delighted to announce that I’ll be heading over to the Isle of Wight on April 19th for Record’s Store Day and to celebrate the occasion I’ll be performing at St. Boniface Church in Bonchurch (dating back to the 11th Century).

I very much look forward to being back on the Isle and to seeing you there!

Tickets and more information can be found here

Keep well,

Alessi

Money

It’s only money honey
It’s not gonna hurt no one
Still it can’t be that much fun
Dragging a heart of gold
Well it must weigh a ton

And it’s only beer my dear
It won’t bring me any nearer
What’s clearer in the dark
Makes getting out of bed so hard

But you are rich with my love
Oh you are!

You are rich with my love
Oh you are!

Hands in the sink

When my hands are in the sink
Is the time I tend to think about
How you live and who you’re with

I am tattooed to your lids
For as long as you will live
What about tonight, are the colours just as bright?

I clean his clothes but it’s yours I would have chose

From my kitchen window
I watch my flowers grow
When his car pulls up is when I know

Good night kisses on my neck
Wake me up bring me back
To a house I call home
Feels like I’m standing on my own

I found a heart in a town in the west
But I thought of you each time that I lifted my dress
I found a heart in a town in the west
But I thought of you each night that I lifted my dress

Mountain

On top of this mountain
I think of my friends
I miss you
I miss you
It’d be wrong to pretend

With tens toes on mother earth
And I’m missing him again
I bid you
I bid you
Farewell again

Sans Balance

It took time for my mind to catch up
By the ruff of my neck
Tore my heart
Spilt his cup
Crashing into moral coral
Your sap tastes like sorrow

De temps en temps
J’entendre ton Coeur
Mais chaque fois je sens a toujours la même heure
C’est la danse que je vois quand j’y pense
Et nos bras sur le toit mais sans balance
Mais arête la balance
Je m’ arête de balancer

When I swam not long ago
Saw your shadow there gliding deep below
But you moved and will move on still
Life is good and it can’t stay still
No it can’t stay still
No it can’t stay still

A parade down there in view
Hooves on the move
Pink, white and blue
Pressed to the glass I thought I saw you
Palms on the pane but it’s not truly you
It’s not truly you

Whatever makes you happy

Whatever makes you happy is what you’re supposed to do
Whatever makes you happy is what you’re supposed to do

He who’s wagging his tail
Claiming he is the one
That he will never bail
Before he up and runs

Whatever makes you happy is what you’re supposed to do
Hey big chicken, who are you kidding?
Hey big chicken, who are you kidding?

Whatever makes you lonely you must avoid or else
Whatever makes you lonely you must avoid or else

He who’s flapping his tongue
Saying he never cared
That his cold heart got stung
Thought you’d be scared

Whatever makes you happy is what you’re supposed to do
Hey big chicken, who are you kidding?
Hey big chicken, who are you kidding?

Those Waves

Singing you to sleep
The sweetest of frequency
Whirling in your whistling nose
Flickers of dancing in your toes

You’re dreaming
You’re dreaming

I’d rather you not set off tomorrow
I don’t like it when you’re too far I can’t follow
The distance will lead you to sea
Those waves will make you forget
I know it’s foolish
But please don’t forget me

When you’re dreaming
When you’re dreaming
The distance will lead you to sea

I often get like this when you lean in to touch me
Eyelashes move like mist
When you lean in to talk to me

Show me that you’re thinking of me
Show me that you’re thinking of me

You wake up

Afraid of everyone

The National (cover)
Written by Matthew Berninger and Aaron B. Dessner

Then I’m radio and then I’m television
I’m afraid of everyone, I’m afraid of everyone
Lay the young blue bodies, with the old red violets
I’m afraid of everyone, I’m afraid of everyone
With my kid on my shoulders I try
Not to hurt anybody I like
But I don’t have the drugs to sort,
I don’t have the drugs to sort it out, sort it out

I defend my family with my orange umbrella
I’m afraid of everyone, I’m afraid of everyone
With my shiny new star spangled tennis shoes on
I’m afraid of everyone, I’m afraid of everyone
With my kid on my shoulders I try
Not to hurt anybody I like
But I don’t have the drugs to sort,
I don’t have the drugs to sort it out, sort it out
I don’t have the drugs to sort it, sort it out, sort it out

Your voice has stolen my soul, soul, soul
Your voice has stolen my soul, soul, soul
Your voice has stolen my soul, soul, soul
Your voice has stolen my soul, soul, soul
Your voice has stolen my soul, soul, soul
Your voice has stolen my soul, soul, soul
Soul soul soul soul soul

Big Dipper

They will sing and they will dance
But they won’t glance
No they won’t from behind the wall

I always wanted to
You often think it through
But the chances are small from behind the wall

He’s standing in the sun, kicking up the earth
Putting off his savings till his dove’s given birth
Big dipper ought to whip her!

She will greet life with open arms
Laced with love, filled to the brim with forgiveness
Thank goodness for forgiveness

She moves like a bird he lands with a thump!
Barricades every chance of her leaving the dump
She’s a princess of forgiveness, oh.

They will cry when you’re dead
I will not I remember what you said
You’re just getting it ready for me
When it’s done and dusted you will fetch for me

And so now you’re sowing our seeds
And favourite trees
Making our garden so pretty
So you’ll have plenty to share with me
My fists are clenched
I long to sit with you on our garden bench
My fists are clenched

The Good Song

I’m told there’s good things I’ve done
When you’re me you remember none

I’m told there’s nice things I’ve won
When you’re me you remember one

You’re good
You’re good

I’ve seen the house where you’ve grown
Caves you slept in
Hills you slipped down
Your siblings in tow

You’re good
You’re good

The rain

I’ve been listening to the wind for you
I’ve been wondering how the day’s been for you
The wind’s been whistling and I know it’s you
Your shadow’s missing
Space replaces you

And I hope that all is as good as it should be
And the sand parts for you to sea
For you to see

When I’m sleeping I have dreams of two
We’re only breathing and our bed is cool
Sometimes you’re smiling in a mountain pool
Moon’s always shining
Makes our shadows tall

And I hope that all is as good as it should be
And the sand parts for you to sea
For you to see
To sea
For you to see

Veins are blue

I’m doing exactly as I please
Falling but this time
Not grazing my knees

You did what you had to do
You thought you’d choose
I’ll go along with you
I’ve nothing to lose

But, you can’t hold me down anymore
You can’t hold me down

I stayed up talking to a man I barely knew
(She saw right through)
Made me feel special, something you rarely do
(They rang out true)
Soft smoke out the window
Chase a smell on a neck and his veins are blue

But, you can’t hold me down anymore
You can’t hold me down

And his veins are blue
And his veins are blue blood
And his veins are blue
And his veins are blue blood

Tin Smithing

I’ll be tin smithing you be tin smithing me
Where I am thinking of hands
Nothing on us but sea

When I hit the hay or the hearth or the mat
No one’s there to answer me back
No one ties my plait but me

Now I look forward to love
Riding the train down our track
Make stops on the way back
Call and I will call you back
Call and I will I mean that

Frank showed us the rose
And the colours they chose to transcend the sunlight and bend the moonlight

Fly tying looks fun whether veiling or masking
Dim, bashful or basking
Just tie the tag for your team

When I hit the hay or the hearth or the mat
No one’s there to answer me back
No one lies back flat with me

When stars they flew down to rust
Making sand, making dust
Sculpting sister from sand
Making us with their hands
Made to love understand
Making us with their hands
Made to love understand

The Bird Song

Bird look to the sea, into my eyes
he is hopeless,
and heartless
and soul-less
oh i hope not, i hope not.

and bird look to the sea, tell me what d’you see?

He is heartless,
and loveless
and soul-less

Oh i hope not, i hope not

Ooooo…..

Well i believe in plates,
that they’ll collide and gravitate
and i’ll face him
and we’ll love then
Oh i hope so, I hope so

Ooooo…..

Run

I’m just scared and some
of love

is it you?

I’m just scared and some
of heart

is it true?

O where did you come from?
Felt like I knew you for long

There are people that you have to meet
There are faces that you have to seek
And persons that want to hear your songs

You better run

The Robot

Built you a robot, started it off
drew him freckles, connect the dots
and he likes his violin,
his body is made of tin ;

He’ll take you hiking, keep you in shape
his games of scrabble keep you awake
and though his body is stiff,
there is nothing like his kiss.

His voice can be monotonous,
and thought he’s really nothing like us
he’s something wondeful.
his soul is beautiful.
pluck him a feather and give him soul!
pluck him a feather and give him soul!

He likes clean bedding,
doesn’t care for Otis Redding,
doesn’t like being at the dock of the bay
wished his girlfriend would stay.

That song reminds him there was one like him,
but his tears rusted her away.

Stay in one place friend!
Won’t you stay in one place friend?
What’s the race?

Stalemate

You were dreaming of your mermaid while we laid in the dark
with my head on your chest listening for your heart
i was hoping for an answer all i got was a dart
up my legs past my dress
that’s how it always starts

they said i can’t take lessons
that i would crash into things
can’t i lay out all my trinkets and just sit there and sing

i’d like an open road
a deserted plain
lie under stars and start all over again

when love’s on your mind you are totally blind
not looking over your back
knocking into crap
you leave your keys in the door
you think it’s evermore
wear your heart on your sleeve
stick on Roberta Flack

some people drink to their fears
or concentrate on careers
but you cannot make a cat bark or an owl a lark

now who’s waiting for the phone to ring?
it’s a sad song
it’s a bad thing
it’s a stalemate
it’s a sad thing

you’re not half as old as you think you are
you’re not half as cold as the sea is far
the only thing i’ve learnt is i like singing
all the lessons that the guitar is bringing

Maybe I know

Maybe I know that he’s been a cheatin’
Maybe I know that he’s been untrue
But what can I do

I hear them whispering when I walk by
He’s gonna break her heart and make her cry
I know it’s me they’re talking about
I bet they all think I’ll never find out

Ohhh but Maybe I know that he’s been a cheatin’
Maybe I know that he’s been untrue but what can I do

My friends are telling me that he’s no good
He isn’t treating me the way he should
He really loves me that’s all I can say
Before my tears fall I just walk away

Ohh but Maybe I know that he’s been a cheatin’
Maybe I know that he’s been untrue
But what can I do
Ohhhh

Deep down inside he loves me
Though he may run around
Deep down inside he loves me
Some day he’ll settle down

Ohhh Maybe I know that he’s been a cheatin’
Maybe I know that he’s been untrue
But what can I do

He really loves me that’s all I can say
Before my tears fall I just walk away

Ohh but Maybe I know that he’s been a cheatin’
Maybe I know that he’s been untrue
But what can I do

Blanket

Don’t go spreading your love like a blanket
and that well water better water me well
that water better water me well

Time Travel

come on and zip it up
I couldn’t help myself
the night was short but forgetting is so long

and in the safety grip
one hand in my own
you held my arm and I felt my sores sewn

and the big sky could’ve made me cry
but we’ll ride and write on instead
waving off goodbye could’ve made me cry
but we’ll ride and write on ahead

besides now i can time travel just lying in bed

Go on and throw me a bone
make it a dial tone
the night is long and I know you’re alone

and if you crack the whip
I’m gonna let it slip
like I like you and nobody else

and the big sky could’ve made me cry
but we’ll write and ride on instead
waving off goodbye could’ve made me cry
but we’ll write and ride on ahead

besides now I can time travel just lying in bed

On the plains

Well the wind blew in and it brought the news
but what could you do from there?
So you sat on the plain and you thought of the game
You lost

And it is hard to say what kept me going
when I don’t know what kept you gone
But when I love someone I trust their tongue.
I am young
I am dumb

And it hurt, ’cause you lied to her

we are a good, tight fit
we were sewn close knit but you’ve filled pages of your own
and there are still some stages that I’ve only been shown

I tried to make it better
Unsuccessful I guess

Title: Must have grown

When I’m in my room I am back in the womb
all my books and my bed have not moved
But now all of the songs have been sung
And now all of these sounds have been sown

O! By now I must have grown

with his iris on me, arrow pointed his bee
had to sting, crack cacoon, hum honey
In my bed it was not like the books
I don’t know what he meant by his looks.

O! By now I must’ve grown

Wire

keep it in my pocket
she can’t hold it where she lay
she don’t need it where she is, plenty of that where it came

I sit it by the counter, where I sell the things that kill
propped up by dollar bills, behind this rusted till

I’m tired of walking this wire
it keeps me awake
for heaven’s sake
I was made for this girl, I feel lonely
my friends don’t seem to know me like I thought they did

Another wasted day
counting every single breath
so this is what is left, a charm to wear around my neck
to hold me close to her
when I’m being pulled apart
why am i always kept away from what I hold inside my heart?

Kind of man

Only a kind of man can do this and then do it again
make you feel like you’re new
like all he loves is you

Only a kind of man can do this and then do it again
make you feel like he’s true
like all he loves is you

Like all he loves is you
is all he loves you?
I say it’s true

Cotton and The Thread

Pass the cotton
Pass the thread
Tapestry tapping your pretty, pretty head

Pass the paint
Pass the brush
Stand there still, while I draw you in a rush

You don’t see what you do to me

The reeds and the weeds tangle my feet
But you are the pulse, I follow your beat

In the cytoplasm, asphyxiation
You feed me with your light, your rhythm

When you sleep I watch your chest
Watch you rise with the sun in the west
Copy your breathing rhythm so I can be more like you
Learn your lucid training so we can both sleep there too
In dreams we face an identical view.

Glendora

The kids on the corner
They’re learning the bad trends with their fingers raised to the skies

The homeless and hungry
They’re sure short of money but they keep praying for passers by

The modern and classy
They pretend to be trashy and it puts a grin to my face

I live with a lover
His eyes green my lover, I love when he sleeps at my place

O baby
Don’t sleep just yet
There are things I have left to tell you, yes.

O I could touch forever his islands and treasure
But I fear that one day this will end

I’m living too quickly says oh far too many
But aren’t they just moving too slow?

You say I’m the sun but to me you’re the one
And I dream that one day this won’t end

I always think of him
I pretty much love him, to me he’s the ultimate best

O Baby
Don’t sleep just yet
There are things I have left to tell you, yes.

I’ll stand behind the curtain
I’ll end with a closer
Here you are
Hear you are.

The Dog

You strike gold walking with your dog
Something in his mouth, you whip it out
It’s something soft

In the palm of your hand
Something from across the land, it’s your love
In his animal’s eyes, he’s telling you where to hide your love

How are things looking?

You strike gold walking with your dog
Something in his mouth, you whip it out
It’s something soft

In the palm of your hand
Something from across the land, it’s your love
In his animal’s eyes, he’s telling you where to hide your love

How are things looking?

You strike gold

Hummingbird

Hummingbird
You are set free
Flex your wings
And steal me away

He picked her last winter as one pulls out a splinter
Red eyed and tender he needed a mender
She stuck around like a weed in the ground
Raising her voice when given a choice

Never once unstood why he slept in a hood
Did he try to conceal the love that he’d feel
When she sang in her sleep or brushed passed his sweet heels
He never was one for finishing meals

And when he felt she was right at her tether he carried her down to the river
Told her blue is the colour of calm and that life is better when spent in her arms
So they made shapes with their limbs in the water
Imagined names they’d reserve for their daughter
Kaleidoscope pulse pounding palms on their backs
‘ Darling breathe in. Hold it there and relax ‘.

Much like a squid as she sank in her dress
Reeds rip the frills on her sweet Sunday Best
And tie latches on to Old Goodness’ anchor
And he now regrets dressing smart and fancy like a banker

And as shells act as lids on their eyes
Algae like clouds does commence in its rise
In clear blue spheres he is trying to pray
Hoping the dove, well she will not fly away

‘ Clasp my hand tight,
we will survive the night
and if the blue it drowns you,
Well i’ll be right behind you ‘.

Hummingbird
You are set free
Flex your wings
And steal me away

Memory Box

There’s so much time for holding hands
When you’re sleeping with your man in the ground
So while we’re awake let’s keep talking
While we’re awake we’re sleepwalking
The longer I wait the more I learn about you

There’s so much time for lying around
When you’re sleeping with your man in the ground
So while we’re let’s keep singing
While we’re awake keep the telephone ringing
The longer I wait the more I learn about you
The magic that is you

Like how there’s a memory box above your Mother’s bed
Inside she wrote the first words that you ever said
I’ve got my whole life
You’re in my time line
Smoking on balconies, have a fine time

You’re not a sick and dying whale
This is the start of our tale

Woman

The ring around the moon last night
Was caused by the refraction of moon light
From the crystals of silver, crunchy ice
I thought I’d call to say I think you’re nice

Somethings are better sung than said
I’d like to walk around in your beautiful head
To dangle solar systems above your wicker bed
All I am is a woman

The web across your eyes last night
Was spun by the sandman’s surprise
When I dreamt, I dreamt I kissed you between the eyes
When I awoke, I had been blinded by your light

Somethings are better sung than said
I’d like to walk around in your magical head
To dangle photographs above your wicker bed
You started out in a woman
Became a man in a woman
All I am is a woman
When I am looking at the moon I am blinded by your light.

The Asteroids Collide

Your eye lashes they act as cloaks for your telescope eyes
Your ears they point skyward,
Transmitting mockingbird’s call to the skies

With the shudder of your boots,
Moon dust reach the roots of the neighbourhood’s favourite tree
Be friends with me

The Asteroids Collide
The feelings liquidise
You’re safe
You’re scared

The weight that you haul
Leaves cracks in the wall
You’re safe
You’re scared

You’re enclosed and in love
Your little white dove
She flutters and mutters your name

According to accordian
Your outspoken loudspeaker shines
Hyacinths hypnotise

Your black hair is pushed back
Thin skin is does lack any colour or trace of the sun ray’s race

The television’s flickering
The frequency you’re giving off is a powerful thing

Tell me why does love fly in, fly out when you’re barely looking?
I swear I was not, I was not looking

The Asteroids Collide
The feelings liquidise
You’re safe
You’re scared

The weight that you haul
Leaves cracks in the wall
You’re safe
You’re scared

You’re enclosed and in love
Your little white dove
She flutters and mutters your name

Tell me why does love fly in, fly out when you’re barely looking?
I was not looking

The anchor clanks
Your heart sank
Your body locks
Your ship it has docked
New life has find the island
And you’re stuck
On the island

Constellations

You’re very pretty you know
You’re very rare you know
I’m very clumsy you heard
But I’m a special kind of bird

You’re lovely
Yes you are

You’re very different you know
You’re very magical you know
You’d melt me if I were snow
My heart, I’d have baby to sew
To sew

If your body is the sky then your freckles are the constellations

Your Mother loves you you know
She loves you more than the moon
Your separation won’t be for long
But it will be coming for you, far too soon

She loves you yes she does
She loves you yes she does
Hell, I’m in love with you
And it’s true
My branches they turn to you
Asking you, do you love me too?

Ribbon Lakes

Let’s go fishing
Take me to the ribbon lakes
Do not cover your love
If the brother you love
Colours your slate

How did you find me?
I don’t want to know
I do not wanna know

How did you fine me?
He’s does not want to know
It’s not for them to know

Keep your heart in line
It is better to keep it all inside

If you care for your man then do it
If you care for your man then do it
If you care for your man then conceal the way that you feel

‘Cause once it’s known
Then it shows and the joy that glows slows down
And it’ll spread through town.

Over the Hill

Once we get over the hill
We’ll find a library
I like the bird books best but you can choose from a variety

And if you shake the book really fierce,
Out will fly a note from me
I know we’ll get there eventually but I’m English so bear with me

I love you
O i love you

We feed ducks in the local park and eat ice cream, get all jittery
Not from the sugar in the dessert itself but from what you do to me
I want us to be sewn together on a detailed embroidery
So the distance and the water between us won’t keep you away from me

I love you
O I love you

Well all the rivers, oceans and lakes try to wash you on a shore faraway
And all the miles and the months that we wait, I’ve packed my suitcase
I’m here to stay
O i will walk across vast miles of sand to keep wrapped up in your hands
It’s just a shame that from the very beginning you’ve always been her man

I love you
O I love you

It’s just a shame that from the very beginning you’ve always been her man.

The Horse

I was told that kite flying’s for lovers
I was told that we can’t share the covers
If you’d like me to, I’ll try to be brave like you
I know you’d like me to, I’ll try to be pretty too

I was told that you rest with another
Weren’t you told son, that that’s wrong by your mother?
If you’d like me to, I’ll try to be brave like you
I know you’d like me to, I’ll try to be pretty too
If what you mean’s so true, why let invertebrates cling to you?
If what you hold loves you, why’re you watching the horse pass you?

The horse.
I was told that kite flying’s for lovers.

Magic Weather

On the highest shelf, where you’ll find she
hiding ‘neath the nouns and verbs and similes
Find a wooden step, place it carefully
Lodge it between the couplets and apostrophes
Blindfold your brain, feel your way for me
In reaching out she’s giving far too much to thee

A letter for each limb, a rhyme for every time
His brain guides she to poetry, read it down the line
Behind my creaking ledger, ink stains record the weather
Following her twists and turns like a feather

So long as I hold her and sleep with an umbrella
The freedom’s there, I can depend on Magic Weather
