Keira is an extraordinary typewriter artist from Dorset, now based in West London where she makes her prints and jewellery.

You can pop in to see her works on show every day from 9am – 9pm and will be able to catch her on Fridays February 17th & 24th while she types musicians who have inspired her right before your very eyes.

Ms Rathbone now also has an Etsy shopwhere you can find personalised pendants, silk typed badges and some Valentine themed prints (that may well also come in handy throughout the year!).

If you are in or around Gent this winter, try to make a stop at Collette chocolate and book house. Inside you’ll find a lovely wooden counter serving many pastries and home made chocolates. The cafe specialises in various hot chocolate flavours and books line the staircase up to the peaceful reading room. You can sip and look out onto the historic city or step into a story picked up on the stairs.

This cafe feels like a spot from the 19th century. From the outside, you’ll find two wooden houses that join on the porch. Through one door is a bustling cafe and through the other door is a calm coffee & tea house with an unusual list of brews that extend across all the walls. It’s a lovely spot with lots of comfortable chairs upstairs and downstairs that’ll be cosy for the winter.

Similar in spirit and atmosphere is The Rimsky Korsakoffee House in Portland, Oregon. Serving yummy coffee, tea and deserts since 1980, locals have been coming in for after-dinner treats but despite it looking closed from outside, you can pop in during the day too. If you’re in the area, make sure to stop in! I visited the cafe last October and the menu may very well have changed but if not, I recommend the warm lavender milk!

Hi to Hi-Rise

Down a leafy street near Harvard Square, you’ll find a beautiful, simple white house. Inside you’ll find corners, nooks and an attic to sit in and benches amongst trees outside. Hi-Rise specialises in delicious fresh baked goods, preserves, home brewed coffee and fresh soups. You can also find Hi-Rise treats at local farmers markets but I can’t find the addresses at the moment. If I can find them, I’ll post ‘em.

The Return of Craft Night!

A couple of years ago while out on a stroll, my family and I came across the City Reliquary in Williamsburg and were blown away by such a find. From the outside it looks like a treasure shop and inside it’s a mini-museum run by a non-profit group that holds events in the community.

and after a little break… Craft Night is back at the City Reliquary!

Join Resident Craftster Anna Grant, in collaboration with the Corduroy Appreciation Club, (and a tiny fleet of sewing machines), to craft your very own Corduroy bow ties and fascinators. This Special Corduroy Craft Night is being held in anticipation of the grandest date in our
history: 11.11.11, the date which most closely resembles Corduroy. Corduroy for crafting will be provided, as will the finest in Corduroy embellishments, and Corduroy refreshments will be served.

If you’re on the lookout for a special gift or some handy decorations, be it lace, buttons, fabrics, beads, try to make a bee line for Petit
Pan and Mercerie Petit Pan at 76 rue Francois Miron & 39 rue Francois Miron. They both stock a beautiful, unusual selection of bits and pieces wonderful for window shopping or popping inside.

The next time you’re in Brussels and either visiting with a little one or on the lookout for a special read for them, pop into Le Wolf. It’s a wonderful indoor treehouse-style book shop, reading center and cafe right in the heart of the city. The staff are very friendly and helpful and they host interesting workshops for grownups and children, which you can read about here »

Sept US tour with Laura Marling

Alessi’s Ark will support Laura Marling on her September US tour, playing material from her upcoming album Time travel. Having been associated with Marling for quite some time via their mutual involvement in the Sunday evening London “Communion” gigs organized by Mumford & Sons’ Ben Lovett, Alessi and Marling will bring the US version of their successful European run to the United States for a string of dates.
